Germany's cartel office has approved Porsche AG's acquisition of a non-controlling interest in Varta as well as a majority of shares and sole control of the battery maker's business unit for lithium-ion cells for electric cars.

Porsche AG (ETR:P911) has joined a group of creditors putting together a rescue package for ailing battery maker Varta. Under the deal, Varta's debt will be cut from €485 million to €200 million, the company said.
