HSAI gets the edge over OUST as profitability, automotive lidar leadership, global partnerships and a cheaper valuation outweigh Ouster's rally.

Hesai Technology, a Shanghai-based manufacturer of the sensors that allow robots and self-driving vehicles to see, was blacklisted as a national security threat in 2024 by the U.S. Department of Defense, which designated Hesai as a Chinese military entity. Its presence on the blacklist does not prevent U.S. companies from using Hesai's technology, and the company has been expanding its reach in the U.S., including via a partnership with Nvidia.

Investor attention may have turned elsewhere in recent weeks, but the autonomous vehicle race is still quietly churning behind the scenes. In just the last few days, for example, Finland took a significant step toward approving key self-driving software, and privately held Terawatt Infrastructure secured $300 million in debt financing to expand driverless vehicle infrastructure, among other developments.

The SpaceX NASDAQ: SPCX IPO is dominating headlines, but Luke Lango of InvestorPlace says investors are looking at this story through too narrow a lens. The real trade isn't just one rocket company going public, it's a decades-long convergence of four separate business ventures into one AI-driven empire, and the stocks riding that wave are already starting to move.

Hesai Group continued to report surging shipments in Q1 and assumes good momentum to continue throughout 2026 as LiDAR demand expands. Earnings expansion is slowed down by a continued shift into cheaper, lower-margin products. HSAI's gross margin declined in Q1, and revenue growth has stalled in comparison to shipment growth. HSAI's venture into physical AI presents long-term revenue potential past LiDAR sensors.
