Horizon Technology Finance Corporation operates as a business development company (BDC) with a core focus on providing financing and making equity investments in businesses in their early growth phases. The firm primarily offers secured debt and venture loans to companies that have already secured funding from venture capital firms. Its investment interests span various industries, including technology, life sciences, healthcare information and services, and clean technology. Geographically, Horizon Technology Finance Corporation directs its investments towards companies situated within the United States.

Externally managed BDCs have to meet a high bar to qualify for a durable income portfolio. Their fees and sub-optimal incentives provide a structural headwind for long-term compounding. In my portfolio, I hold 2 externally managed BDCs that have passed the test.

We take a look at the action in business development companies through the last week of May and highlight some of the key themes we are watching. BDCs outperformed all other income sectors last week, with historic underperformers PSEC, TCPC, and HRZN rallying despite median valuations remaining near recessionary lows. Relative valuations for holdings like BCSF, BBDC, and GBDC have improved, but yield compression after outperformance warrants reassessment of fundamental appeal and potential portfolio rotation.

Horizon Technology Finance is upgraded to Hold as portfolio structure shows potential for improvement and management demonstrates commitment through share repurchases. HRZN trades at a 33% discount to NAV, reflecting persistent portfolio and earnings weakness despite a high 15.5% dividend yield with thin coverage. Q1 results were disappointing: net investment income fell to $0.19/share, and interest income declined, but new investments and merger-driven equity injection offer cautious optimism.

In the article I list all monthly-paying BDCs. This list is then reduced to a handful of BDCs. These remaining BDCs, in my view, are the one with the strongest prospect to generate durable income without permanent NAV decay.
