FGRO: This Growth ETF Will Get A New Name And Ticker Next Week

The week ending December 8, 2023 was fairly busy for the ETF industry, with 15 new ETFs added. Perhaps the biggest ETF rollout for the period was the actively managed “Core-Plus” bond launched by Vanguard.

Fidelity Growth Opportunities ETF is a non-transparent fund with underwhelming performance and hidden holdings. FGRO heavily invests in growth stocks from the technology and communication services sectors, lacking exposure to the real estate and materials sectors. When compared to its peer ETF, FGRO has a higher allocation to smaller market capitalizations and growth stocks, leading to increased volatility and inconsistent sector weightings.

Despite challenging economic backdrop, these global ETFs trumped the S&P 500 in the first nine months of 2023.

The Fidelity Growth Opportunities ETF is a relatively new ETF with a very high allocation to Technology and Communication Services stocks. This article reviews the ETF and briefly compares it to an ETF that invests in the benchmark used by FGRO and a second pure Technology ETF. So far, FGRO has lagged both ETFs referenced in Summary #2. That plus its short history garners a Hold rating for now.

This actively managed ETF has an excellent pedigree and is managed by an industry giant. This fintech is up more than 100% this year and has a bright future.

Large-cap growth ETFs continue to lead large-cap value ones in 2023. Through May 16, the iShares Russell 1000 Growth ETF (IWF) was up 16%, beating the iShares Russell 1000 Value ETF (IWD) by 1,700 basis points year-to-date.
