M&A was almost dormant in 2023. In the US, as a proportion of the market value of the benchmark equity indices, it fell to its lowest level in 20 years, according to McKinsey. Credit investors are not traditionally supposed to be fans of M&A, and it's true we are wary of leveraging M&A, where debt is loaded onto balance sheets to buy competitors. We are seeing a comeback for M&A that we think is likely to continue through 2024.

The week ending March 1 brought 17 new ETFs into the market, including funds from Fidelity, First Trust, Innovator, AllianzIM, YieldMax, Miller Value Partners, and newcomer Regan Capital. DWS also rolled out its first actively managed ETF with the launch of the Xtrackers RREEF Global Natural Resources ETF (NRES) on the Nasdaq.

Recent uncertainty, instigated by the issues seen across the financial sector, has led to a change in investment flows seen across exchange traded funds. A change in investment flows can be seen over the month of March as equity market volatility has increased.

Among the fixed income themes that market participants were focusing on entering 2023 were the possibility of a bond market rebound, which is materializing to some extent, and increased focus on the combination of bonds and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles in sustainable bonds.

Twenty-six exchange-traded products were added to the list, and 40 funds were removed, making August a busier month in terms of removals.

The sudden stop to markets induced by COVID-19 caused a substantial repricing of credit risk globally, and central banks, treasuries, and ministries of finance around the world responded unequivocally.

We downgrade investment grade credit to neutral and increase our overweight in high yield as we see volatility rising after a rally in risk assets.
