Add a Manual Account
Create a manual portfolio account, enter holdings by ticker, shares, and cost, and understand merge-on-add.
A manual account is a portfolio you maintain by hand — no brokerage connection, just you logging what you own. It's the fastest way to start, and for many investors it's all they ever need.
Creating the Account
- Open the Portfolio page. Your first account is ready and waiting — a fresh portfolio jumps straight to adding holdings.
- For additional accounts, use the New Account button or the Settings tab → manage accounts, and name each one (for example "Roth IRA" or "Taxable — Schwab").
- Add your holdings.
Adding a Holding
Each holding needs three things:
- Ticker — search by symbol or company name.
- Shares — how many you own. You can split the count into shares you bought and shares acquired through dividend reinvestment (DRIP), which powers the yield-on-cost breakdown later.
- Cost — what you paid. This is your cost basis, and it's what gain/loss and return numbers are measured against, so use real numbers from your brokerage statement rather than guesses.
You can also add cash and custom lines to reflect the account's full value.
Merge-on-Add: One Position Per Ticker
Each account keeps one position per ticker. If you add a symbol the account already holds, the new entry folds into the existing position — shares and cost add up, and the average cost blends. The add screen badges these rows as "Owned" so you know you're topping up, not duplicating.
This is deliberate: the model is incremental upkeep. After the initial setup, you just log each new buy and the position stays accurate. A "last entry" date on the add screen reminds you how far you're caught up.
Editing and Removing
Any holding can be edited later — shares, cost, DRIP split — or removed entirely from the Holdings tab. Accounts themselves are renamed, reordered, or deleted from the Settings tab.
