In broad terms, developing world stocks are delivering the goods for investors this year, with the widely followed MSCI Emerging Markets Index up 26%. Count India stocks among the emerging markets laggards, because the MSCI India Index is off 8.52%.

The United States and India are continuing negotiations toward an agreement aiming at a trade target of $500 billion by 2030, although as of mid-April 2026, no official deal has been reached. Benefits of an agreement of this kind could include lower U.S. tariffs on Indian goods and increased flows of industrial, agricultural, and tech products, among others.

The MSCI Emerging Markets Index entered Monday with a year-to-date gain of nearly 31%. India stocks, which represent the third-largest allocation in that gauge, have been overt disappointments.

Some view International stocks are experiencing a resurgence this year. And developing world equities aren't just participating in the trend.

For many advisors and investors, accessing emerging markets via broad-based funds, including ETFs, is the preferred operating method. That strategy limits exposure to region-specific issues and political volatility, among other traits.

Following a multiyear run in which Indian equities and related ETFs were emerging market leaders and among the best-performing ex-U.S. stocks, the group retreated in the first quarter even as other international markets sprang to life.

With President-elect Trump set to take the oath of office in less than two weeks, and with 2025 in its early innings, advisors and investors are likely evaluating asset classes and ideas that could work well this year. Not surprisingly, following a now lengthy stretch of disappointment, broad-based emerging markets strategies aren't atop those lists.

After commanding significant attention over the course of 2023 and through the early stages of this year, it may feel as though as focus on India equities and related ETFs has waned. That shouldn't be the case, because with assists from the financial services and technology sectors, India stocks hit record highs on Thursday.
